In Nathaniel Hawthornes classic of American literature, The Scarlet Letter was a badge of disgrace. Analog design expertise--the Big A--could be seen the same in a largely Digital World. Yet analog gurus are the ones who know how to light up flat panel displays; how to add another five minutes of life to a battery-powered portable; how to add Mbytes to hard disk drive platters; how to squeeze an extra dB of signal strength from so-called digital subscriber lines.
In his "The Scarlet A" weekly column, editor Bill Schweber and former editor Stephan Ohr highlights industry trends, their impact on designers, companies and consumers. It is a highly personal, informative and often entertaining view, which explores the many ways that analog is different.
