SEOUL, South Korea Technology developed in South Korea for transferring data over power lines is attracting interest from overseas investors.
Keyin Telecom, a Korean supplier of advanced communications and networking technologies, demonstrated high-speed Internet access at the CeBit show in Germany last month using power-line communications (PLC) technology and a 1-Mbit/second modem. Keyin also showed an ASIC chip set and "home coupler" for 2- and 4-Mbit/s PLC connections.
Company sources said foreign utilities, information technology companies and electronics manufacturers have approached Keyin about exporting the technology. South Korea's Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said it has received offers for the export of PLC modems and accessories.
Keyin recently reached an agreement with German energy company RWE Energie to deploy Keyin's PLC technology as part of an RWE field trial. The PLC system has been installed in RWE's demonstration facility.
"This field trial agreement between RWE and Keyin Telecom will take us closer to an advanced platform for a potential commercial rollout in European markets, delivering our technology to RWE's portfolio of existing services," said Giwon Lee, president and chief executive of Keyin Telecom.
"Commercialization of the system will be completed next year. We hope we can expand the business in Korea as well," Lee said.
Keyin also hopes to enter the Malaysian market soon, the company said.
