PHOENIX ON Semiconductor has launched a family of single-gate CMOS logic products in the Advanced High Speed CMOS and Very High Speed CMOS (AHC and VHC) performance range. They are designed to handle traditional logic functions in high-density applications ranging from cell phones, camcorders, cameras and disk drives to automotive applications, where physical space is limited and signal routing is a challenge.
William Schromm, director of operations for the company's standard-logic business, said the MC74VHC1GXXX- DFT1 One-Gate devices come in five-lead SOT-353 (SC-88A) packages that measure 2 x 2.1 mm. That's roughly 3 percent of the size of a 20-lead small-outline IC package, he said. The initial offering includes 14 AND, NAND, OR and XOR gates, plus Schmitt-trigger and TTL-compatible input devices. ON Semiconductor expects to add 13 more parts to the family over the next several quarters.
The new parts allow for easier signal routing, smaller circuit boards and increased signal integrity due to the reduced effects of EMI and crosstalk, ON said. According to the company, they can also be used as "quick fixes" in designs where a single logic function is required to correct logic errors or to buffer, switch or isolate electrical signals in telecom/networking transmission gates, display video switching and glue logic applications.
Schromm said the new parts combine the low power dissipation of CMOS with a speed significantly beyond that of LS-TTL logic. Typical propagation delay is 3.7 nanoseconds at 5 volts. He noted that the input and output structure provides design protection even when input voltages of up to 7 V are applied, regardless of the supply voltage.
"This enables the products to be used to interface 5-V circuits to a 3-V environment and vice versa," said Schromm. The products also allow for time-constant change in phase-locked loops. They are priced at 13 cents apiece in quantities of up to 3,000.
