Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced an octal-channel, digital to analog converter (DAC) family with internal reference. Claiming twice the accuracy of competitive devices, the 16it DAC8568, 14bit DAC8168 and 12bit DAC7568 have been designed for data acquisition systems, industrial process control and portable instrumentation.
These devices integrate eight DAC channels in TSSOP-14 or TSSOP-16 packages. The internal reference has a temperature drift performance of 2ppm/°C (typ) up to 5ppm/°C (max) across the operating range, which TI says should help eliminate the need for full-scale system calibration. It can source up to 20mA at the VREFIN/VREFOUT pin.
Power consumption is 0.56mW/channel (which includes the internal reference current) and, as would be expected for industrial applications, the devices operate over a -40°C to +125°C temperature range.
Finally, these devices are monotonic, which according to TI, benefits linearity and minimises undesired code-to-code transient voltages (glitch). They use a 3-wire serial interface that operates at clock rates up to 50MHz. The interface is compatible with standard SPI, QSPI, Microwire, and digital signal processor interfaces.
