2.4GHz wireless LAN power amplifier claims world-class low power-added efficiency

Microsemi Corporation has launched volume production of its LX5518 power amplifier (PA) for IEEE 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN applications in the 2.4 to 2.5 GHz frequency range.

Microsemi's LX5518 amplifier is optimized for ultra-high linear output power from -40 to +85 degrees C while delivering world-class low power-added efficiency (PAE). The device is designed for high-performance applications such as wireless access points and routers that demand improved broadcast range and data rates to accommodate challenging radio frequency transmission environments. The LX5518 PA meets these challenges by delivering 26.2 dBm of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) output power at three percent error vector magnitude (EVM) while consuming only 391 mA of current for cooler operation.

The LX5518 is pin-compatible with Microsemi's earlier LX5535 power amplifier, and adds 1.5 – 2 dBm of output power, enabling customers to migrate easily to higher power without requiring changes to their existing designs.

“This new LX5518 device reflects Microsemi's leadership in WLAN power amplifiers, demonstrating our ability to alleviate difficult thermal performance challenges typically found in high-output power applications,” said Kang Hee Kim, RF product line manager with Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group. “It can simplify the design of new high-output-power WLAN products as well as next-generation products migrating from our earlier LX5535 amplifier.”

Microsemi's broad portfolio of IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN, 802.16e WiMAX and WiBro power amplifiers are used in a variety of applications including wireless access points and half mini-cards for notebooks and netbooks. Reference designs with market-leading WLAN chipset manufacturers are available for many of Microsemi's power amplifiers.

Availability and Pricing

The LX5518 is in volume production and housed in an RoHS-compliant 16-pin, 3 x 3 x 0.9 mm quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities is $0.75.
