Phoenix, Ariz.—ON Semiconductor's GreenPoint reference design for 200-watt power adapters for game consoles offers a blueprint for minimizing both active- and standby-mode power consumption.
Delivering active-mode energy efficiency of 90 percent at full load, the dual-output reference design achieves standby-mode power consumption of less than 1 watt to meet California Energy Commission (CEC), ENERGY STAR, and European Code of Conduct (COC) standards (which target single-output voltage adapters). A typical 200-watt adapter for today's game consoles consumes more than 3 watts in standby mode, according to the company.
The reference design
The GreenPoint topology delivers higher power density, which allows this reference design to be housed in a smaller form factor than typical power adapters with the same power rating. The design can also be modified to include power factor correction.
The enabling device for the reference design is the NCP1562, a highly accurate (±5 percent) active-clamp pulse width modulation (PWM) voltage-mode controller. The NCP1562 allows designers to optimize selection of the switching MOSFET for best performance and cost. The controller features soft-stop, which prevents oscillations often seen in the typical forward active-clamp topology and in turn provides a safer and more robust design. The device also has a dual-mode over-current protection circuit that handles momentary as well as continuous over-current conditions.
