600-W high-temp clamping diode housed in SMA package

Geneva, Switzerland—STMicroelectronics announced the SMA6J series of 600-W peak-pulse-power clamping diodes, capable of operating at a junction temperature of 175°C.

According to ST, the clamping diode is the first 600W 10/1000-microsecond device in the industry to be available in the compact SMA package. The SMA6J series is designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment against ESD and power surges, meeting IEC and MIL STD standards, and is available in both unidirectional and bidirectional versions. The SMA6J diodes feature low leakage currents, making them well-suited for battery-powered products.

The leakage current is specified at 85°C as well as at 25°C, to simplify product design, especially in telecom applications. The leakage current itself, at 0.2 microamps at 25°C, is nearly 80% lower than competitive products, according to ST.

With a nine square millimeter footprint, the SMA package saves 50% of the PCB area required by the SMB package commonly used by suppressors with this power capability, according to ST. In addition, the SMA package's height is reduced to 2.23-mm, meeting the requirements of stacked PCBs typically used in hard disk drives (HDDs), as well as other compact applications.
