Each of these multipliers ensures fundamental frequency and sub-harmonic suppression.
All are based on GaAs (gallum arsenide) PHEMT (pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor) device technologies.
Hittite's HMC576 (priced at about $23), HMC578 , and HMC579 active x2 multipliers are offered in bare die form. They comprise an input amplifier, a low conversion-loss frequency doubler, and an output buffer amplifier.
They operate with an input drive level of +3-dBm (2-mW) and provide between +12-dBm (16-mW) and +16-dBm (40-mW) of output power. By using these three multipliers, you can achieve continuous output frequency coverage from 18-GHz to 46-GHz.
For applications where a SMT (surface-mount technology) RoHS-compatible (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) package is required, Hittite's HMC575LP4, HMC576LC3B, HMC577LC4 , and HMC578LC3B (priced at about $25) active x2 multipliers provide output frequencies from 5-GHz to 33-GHz.
They exhibit output power capability ranging from +12-dBm (16-mW) to +21-dBm (125-mW). That enables them to directly drive many of Hittite's doubly-balanced mixers, and I/Q MMIC (monolithic microwave IC) mixers.
The HMC578LC3B, for example, can drive the LO (local oscillator) port of Hittite's HMC560LM3; it's a 24-GHz to 40-GHz double-balanced mixer.
Compensating For Filter Loss
The HMC578LC3B also provides several dB of output power margin, giving you the option of placing a bandpass filter between the two components if required. The extra margin can make up for filter loss.
