Adjustable OVPs protect low-voltage systems against faults up to 28V

Sunnyvale, Calif.—Maxim Integrated Products' MAX14527/MAX14528 overvoltage protectors (OVPs) are designed to protect low-voltage systems against voltage faults up to 28V.

The devices employ an internal low, 100milliohm (typ) Ron MOSFET to prevent damage to circuitry from overvoltage conditions. This integration eliminates the need for an external n-channel MOSFET, saving board space and reducing cost. Additionally, the devices allow designers to adjust the overvoltage-protection threshold with optional external resistors to any voltage between 4V and 12V. Applications include cell phones, media players, PDAs, and other portable applications requiring accurate overvoltage protection.

The OVPs integrate thermal shutdown protection to prevent overcurrent damage, and they provide ±15kV ESD protection (Human Body Model) when the input is bypassed with a 1microfarad capacitor to ground. Packaged in a lead-free, 2mm x 2mm, 8-pin TDFN, the MAX14527/MAX14528 are fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range.
