Each week, the editor of Planet Analog finds items of interest and then features them in two sections, entitled “Also of Interest” and “Elementals”. Each cites items from publications outside the Planet Analog and EETimes portfolios. And we also have an archive of recent weekly Planet Analog Newsletters, as pdf files; see the list at the very bottom.
“Also of Interest” and “Elementals” is an extension of our belief that engineers are interested in on-going tutorial on obviously relevant topics, as well as the serendipity of exploring topics which are not directly related to their jobs, but which will broaden their knowledge and sometimes spurs innovative and creative approaches. The first box highlights items of general interest to the engineer, while the second highlights basic and tutorial electronic-engineering material. Among the publications we check are IEEE Spectrum , Machine Design , Design News , Laser Focus World , EDN , Electronic Design , NASA Tech Briefs , Microwave Journal , RF & Microwaves , and Physics Today , plus others.
Consider these items as “online-only” extras, and worth a look. (Please note: there are also links to the previous weeks' editions, below this week's items.)
Also of Interest:
- These would complement previously reported MMIC amplifiers designed for overlapping frequency bands:
“Three MMIC Amplifiers for the 120-to-200 GHz Frequency Band,”
NASA Tech Briefs , October 2009 - The controllers that run home appliances will increasingly double as energy meters when the smart-grid initiative gets rolling:
“Embedded Electronics Make the Electric Grid Smarter,”
Machine Design , November 19, 2009 - A recently proposed hybrid jet impingement/micro-channel heat sink technology would extract high heat-flux densities and control a target object's temperature distribution:
“Hybrid Heat Sink Technology Promises Temperature Uniformity,”
Power Electronics Technology , November 2009 - The National Ignition Facility has yet to reach its full 1.8 MJ UV pulse energy, but it has already begun target experiments:
“THE NATIONAL IGNITION FACILITY: NIF is up and running at last,”
Laser Focus World , November 2009
Elementals:
- Whether it's PCI, PCI Express, USB, ISA/ISM, or another alternative, stackable architectures promise to deliver expandable and rugged designs:
“Playing The Board Game: Stack’ em, Pack ’em, And Rack ’em”
Electronic Design , October 22, 2009 - Temperature makes instrumentation amp's gain drift; a resistor corrects it:
“Resistor compensates for instrumentation-amp gain drift,”
EDN , October 8, 2009 - Die attach is the process of making the electrical connection between the semiconductor device die and its package; because it is the first packaging layer in contact with the die, its thermal characteristics are critical:
“Selecting Die Attach Technology for High-Power Applications,”
Power Electronics Technology , November 2009 - New battery chemistries, recipes and packaging are powering a wide range of new applications, from miniature electronics to industrial vehicles:
” Rechargeable Batteries Extend Their Reach,”
Design News , November 2009
