Each week, the editor of Planet Analog finds items of interest and then features them in two sections, entitled “Also of Interest” and “Elementals”. Each cites items from publications outside the Planet Analog and EETimes portfolios. And we also have an archive of recent weekly Planet Analog Newsletters, as pdf files; see the list at the very bottom.
“Also of Interest” and “Elementals” is an extension of our belief that engineers are interested in on-going tutorial on obviously relevant topics, as well as the serendipity of exploring topics which are not directly related to their jobs, but which will broaden their knowledge and sometimes spurs innovative and creative approaches. The first box highlights items of general interest to the engineer, while the second highlights basic and tutorial electronic-engineering material. Among the publications we check are IEEE Spectrum , Machine Design , Design News , Laser Focus World , EDN , Electronic Design , NASA Tech Briefs , Microwave Journal , RF & Microwaves , and Physics Today , plus others.
Consider these items as “online-only” extras, and worth a look. (Please note: there are also links to the previous weeks' editions, below this week’s items.)
Also of Interest:
- Virtual prototyping is valuable, but companies should build and test functional prototypes as early as possible:
“The Place of “Basics” in Product Development,”
Machine Design , April 22, 2010 - Understand shear, tack, and peel to get the most out of PSAs:
“Engineering With Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives,”
Machine Design , April 22, 2010 - Early laser users had few wavelength options; now with new laser emission lines, harmonic generation, tunable lasers, and nonlinear wavelength conversion, users can get (almost) anything they want.:
“50 YEARS OF LASERS: How laser output spread across the spectrum,”
Laser Focus World , May 2010 - Simulation of prosthetic heart valves has become so essential that researchers have invented a Latin phrase for it–“in silico”:
“Analysis Aids in Heart Valve Design,”
Desktop Engineering , June 2010
Elementals:
- Engineers will be applying various test scenarios in lab and small-scale field tests to the LTE devices and equipment they are developing:
“LTE in focus,”
EDN , April 8, 2010 - Computer-aided-engineering (CAE) tools can be pricey, but it is still possible to design a low-noise amplifier at a commercial foundry using low-cost, open-source software simulators:
“Design MMICs On A Budget,”
Microwaves & RF , April 2010 - Use of linear models of phase noise analysis in a closed loop to predict the baseline performance of various synthesizer systems:
“Phase Locked Loop Systems Design for Wireless Infrastructure Applications,”
Microwave Journal , May 2010 - Prototyping an ASIC design first on an FPGA is not only useful for verification but allows more room for algorithm experimentation:
“How to use an FPGA to test a PLL band calibration algorithm,”
Embedded Systems Design , May 2010 - Combining diode limiters with surge arresters can provide protection for the sensitive components in radar receivers against transmitter and other highlevel signals:
“Hybrid Devices Help Protect Radar Systems,”
Defense Electronics , March/April 2010
