Each week, the editor of Planet Analog finds items of interest and then features them in two sections, entitled “Also of Interest” and “Elementals”. Each cites items from publications outside the Planet Analog and EETimes portfolios. And we also have an archive of recent weekly Planet Analog Newsletters, as pdf files; see the list at the very bottom.
“Also of Interest” and “Elementals” is an extension of our belief that engineers are interested in on-going tutorial on obviously relevant topics, as well as the serendipity of exploring topics which are not directly related to their jobs, but which will broaden their knowledge and sometimes spurs innovative and creative approaches. The first box highlights a items of general interest to the engineer, while the second highlights basic and tutorial electronic-engineering material. Among the publications we check are IEEE Spectrum , Machine Design , Design News , Laser Focus World , EDN , Electronic Design , NASA Tech Briefs , Portable Design , and Physics Today , plus others.
Consider these items as “online-only” extras, and worth a look. (Please note: there are also links to the previous weeks' editions, below this week's items.)
Also of Interest:
- The best optical clocks can already beat the best cesium atomic clocks for cutting-edge laboratory measurements:
“Optical clocks set the pace in accurate timekeeping,”
Laser Focus World , May 2009 - Displacements are increased in a departure from traditional electrode configurations:
“Radial-Electric-Field Piezoelectric Diaphragm Pumps,”
NASA Tech Briefs , May 2009 - All-mechanical systems shield delicate electronics from low-frequency vibrations and require less space, investment, and maintenance:
“Vibration Isolators Protect Electronics at Low Frequencies,”

Elementals:
- New lithium-battery designs will be key technologies for efficient EVs and HEVs:
“Managing high-voltage lithium-ion batteries in HEVs,”
EDN , April 9, 2009 - Many industrial and control applications use analog current loops as the physical link for measurements and actuator control:
“Precise Current-Transmitter/Source-Sink Calibrator Has Wide Compliance Range,”
Electronic Design , March 26, 2009 - Some simple calibration techniques applied to a vector network analyzer can aid in making accurate S-parameter measurements on a wide range of impedance transformers:
“Evaluating Impedance Transformers With A VNA,”
Microwaves & RF , April 2009 - With analog/RF design content rising, designers who have lived in the digital domain must learn to cope. Fortunately, design flows are evolving to make the integration easier:
