Each week, the editor of Planet Analog finds items of interest and then features them in two sections, entitled “Also of Interest” and “Elementals”. Each cites items from publications outside the Planet Analog and EETimes portfolios. And we also have an archive of recent weekly Planet Analog Newsletters, as pdf files; see the list at the very bottom.
“Also of Interest” and “Elementals” is an extension of our belief that engineers are interested in on-going tutorial on obviously relevant topics, as well as the serendipity of exploring topics which are not directly related to their jobs, but which will broaden their knowledge and sometimes spurs innovative and creative approaches. The first box highlights items of general interest to the engineer, while the second highlights basic and tutorial electronic-engineering material. Among the publications we check are IEEE Spectrum , Machine Design , Design News , Laser Focus World , EDN , Electronic Design , NASA Tech Briefs , Microwave Journal , RF & Microwaves , and Physics Today , plus others.
Consider these items as “online-only” extras, and worth a look. (Please note: there are also links to the previous weeks' editions, below this week’s items.)
Also of Interest:
- Software developers have long given lip service to the idea of crossing the mechanical-electronic divide. New and future developments may finally deliver on such promises:
“The Future of Electromechanical Design,”
Machine Design , March 18, 2010 - NASA software that calculates optical aberrations will sharpen images from space and could redefine perfect vision for humans:
“Software for Optical Systems Spells the End of Blur,”
IEEE Spectrum , March 2010 - Coherent transmission, phase-shift keying multiple bits per modulation interval, and polarization multiplexing combine to transmit an impressive 100 Gbit/s through a 50 GHz optical channel on step-index single-mode fiber:
“High-speed fiber transmission reaches 100 Gbit/s on a single channel,”
Laser Focus World , March 2010 - Aircraft lightning-strike simulation project heralds easy protection design for modern composite structures:
“Duplicating Lightning via Vector Fields, Opera,”
Desktop Engineering , April 2010
Elementals:
- This application note covers power handling capability of coaxial cables:
” Coaxial Cable Power Handling,”
Microwave Journal , March 2010 - Solar systems scale, but that involves several different technologies:
“Solar Energy Goes Beyond Photovoltaics,”
Electronic Design , March 11, 2010 - Proper selection of capacitors and other components, along with thermal management, can help you save your LEDs from an early demise:
“Burn out: Weak links affect HB-LED lifetime,”
EDN , February 18, 2010 - Depending on the problems at hand, either boundary elements or finite elements may work better:
“The Best Way to Model Magnetic Fields,”
