Battery charger IC protects against faulty input voltages

Responding to demand from portable systems manufacturers, Advanced Analogic Technologies' (AAT) AAT3783 battery charger ic integrates an over-voltage protection (OVP) switch to provide protection against fault input voltages.

Designed to charge 4.2V Li-ion /Polymer battery cells from either AC or USB inputs, AAT's charger IC also features a digital thermal management system, which measures the internal die temperature and reduces the fast charge current when the device exceeds a preset threshold. A thermal loop control continually re-evaluates the circuit die temperature, adjusting the fast charge current up or down until an equilibrium current is reached. This maximises charging efficiency and shortens battery recharge time.

The AA3783 also features over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit and over-temperature protection, whilst a status monitor output pin is provided which can be used to drive an external LED to indicate battery charge status.

This device operates at between -40 C and +85 C and is available in a lead-free, 16pin TDFN package.
