Bidirectional voltage-level translators simplify connectivity

Dallas&#8212Texas Instruments' TXB0104 and TXS0104E bidirectional voltage-level translation devices for connecting next-generation processors and peripherals eliminate the need for direction control signals used in traditional voltage-level translators.

The TXB0104, a 4-bit bidirectional voltage-level device suited for such applications as SD card interfaces, provides universal low-voltage bidirectional translation between any of the device's 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, and 5-volt nodes. Its Vcca port accepts a 1.2 to 3.6 volt supply. Its B port, working from a 1.65 to 5.5 volt source, tracks Vcca .

The TXS0104E, a 4-bit bidirectional voltage-level translator for open drain applications such as I2 C or MMC card interfaces, integrates pull-up resistors to save board real estate and total system cost. The TXS0104E uses two separate configurable power-supply rails. The A port is designed to track Vcca , which accepts a 1.65 to 3.6 volt source; Vcca must be less than or equal to Vccb . The B port is designed to track Vccb , which accepts a supply voltage from 2.3 to 5.5 volts. This scheme allows for low-voltage bidirectional translation between any of the device's 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, and 5-volt nodes.

Key device features include &plusmn15 kV ESD protection on the B port, support of partial power-down modes, and no need for power-supply sequencing.
