Boost regulator for LCDs integrates op amp

Maxim claims that its latest boost regulator integrates all the functions required to power the source drivers, gate drivers, and VCOM backplane in LCDs. With charge pumps, switch control, and a high-current operational amplifier, the MAX17075 has been designed as a cost-effective, high-performance solution for LCD monitors and TVs.

To minimise size, this step-up DC/DC converter has a 1.2MHz switching frequency, which allows the use of low-profile inductors and ceramic capacitors. The device also integrates a power MOSFET and digital soft-start to reduce the number of external components required to control inrush currents. Output voltage is up to 18V from a 2.5V to 5.5V input, which Maxim claims it achieves at more than 85% power efficiency.

Integrated charge pumps provide LCD gate-on and gate-off supplies, and allow the output voltage to be adjusted using external resistive voltage-dividers. A built-in op amp drives the VCOM backplane and features 500mA short-circuit current with a 45V/microsecond slew rate.

The MAX17075 is available in a 4 x 4mm, 24pin TQFN package, and operates across the “40 to +85oC temperature range.
