Broadcom announced two new cable set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip
(SoC) solutions that address the growing demand for digital cable
services in China. These devices provide an integrated DVB-C cable
tuner designed using a 65nm lithography, with 64-1024 QAM demodulator,
advanced security transport processor and MPEG-2 A/V decoder and
graphics engine. They are designed for the digital cable TV market in
China, but also support worldwide cable standards including India,
Europe, Latin America, South America and Asia.
The BCM7003 is a standard definition cable solution which includes a
10/100 Fast Ethernet media access controller (MAC) that enables two-way
interactive services such as video-on-demand (VoD), digital video
recorder (DVR) functionality and Internet browsing. The BCM7004 is a
basic SD cable solution.
According to In-Stat market research more than 37 million people
subscribe to digital cable in China with more than 70 municipalities
having already completed their upgrade to digital services. Growth in
STB shipments have doubled by mid-2008 compared to 2007. Projections
have the number of digital cable subscribers to reach 135 million by
2013 with revenue for set-top-boxes to reach US$1.3 billion in 2011.
