SAN FRANCISCO , Aug. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — California Labor Commissioner Julie Su today announced the successful implementation of an online payment system that is part of an overall effort to modernize functions within Divisions and programs of the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and to improve and streamline interactions with the public.
“The Department is implementing many modernization projects to provide greater service to the public and to reduce costs for the state,” said DIR Acting Director Christine Baker . “By streamlining how we interface with the public we create a more user friendly approach to government.”
The new system allows online payments for annual fees for businesses that have a licensing requirement, which eliminates the need to travel to our offices or to send a check in the mail. The system will soon allow online payments for employers to pay back wages due to workers, as well as penalties and fines. This method of online payment will help businesses that owe payments manage their cash flow and allow flexibility for employers to resolve wage disputes.
“The goal is to provide an avenue that is convenient for businesses that pay licensing fees, back wages due to workers or penalties for labor law violations,” said Labor Commissioner Julie Su . “This system will make it easier for employers who seek to comply with the law. We want to send a strong message to businesses who play by the rules that we are on their side. “
The online payment system provides an alternative way for employers to make required payments. The traditional method of paying fees or penalties requires payment of the entire amount or the establishment of a short term payment plan. Consequence for an employer who defaults on payment includes the possibility of judgments, bank levies or attachments against real estate and personal property.
In 2010 the Department of Industrial Relations first implemented the online payment system for businesses that interact with Cal/OSHA. About 10 percent of businesses that make payments to Cal/OSHA now use the online system. It is anticipated that a similar number of businesses will use the system for payments to the Labor Commissioner's Office.
