Class D amp delivers 30 watts for home TV

Irvine, Calif.&#8212Microsemi's LX1725 class D amplifier delivers 15 watts per channel, or a single channel output of 30 watts, for LCD TVs and home theaters.

“The LX1725's specs are outstanding,” notes Paul Bibeau, senior vice president and general manager for the Integrated Products Group. “Into 8-ohm speakers, its distortion is less than 0.1 percent at 1 kilohertz, its signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 85 dB, and its audio fidelity covers the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz bandwidth,” he said.

Designed with a half-bridge output for each channel, the LX1725 works with both split and single power supply operation. It can operate from 6 to 15 volts in split supply operation, or 12 to 30 volts from a single supply. The outputs can run in a monaural bridge-tied load (BTL) mode that is filterless, reducing system cost and space.

Typical of class-D amplifiers, the LX1725 operates at greater than 90% efficiency. Quiescent current draw is less than 20 milliamps. Other features include mute and standby modes; “pop-free” turn-on and turn-off; over-current, over-voltage, and over-temperature protection; and under-voltage lockout. All the built-in protection modes allow automatic recovery when the fault condition has been cleared. Multiple LX1725 amplifiers are easily synchronized together to prevent beat frequency interference in multi-channel applications.
