Class D amplifier cuts flat-panel display costs

Sunnyvale, Calif. — Maxim Integrated Products Inc.'s highly integrated, filterless, mono, Class D amplifier is said to reduce costs in flat-panel displays and high-end audio applications.

Applications for the MAX9708 Class D stereo amplifier include liquid-crystal display (LCD) and plasma display panel (PDP) televisions and home audio equipment. The MAX9708 offers audio quality with 87 percent efficiency, eliminating the need for a heat sink — while delivering 40 watts of continuous output power (20 W per channel), according to Maxim.

The MAX9708 Class D amplifier operates from a single +10 V to +18 V supply, driving the load in a bridge-tied load (BTL) configuration. It features high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of 90 dB at 1 kHz and low total harmonic distortion plus noise of 0.1 percent.

The MAX9708 audio amplifier offers two modulation schemes: a fixed frequency modulation (FFM) mode, and a spread-spectrum modulation (SSM) mode. The amplifier can be synchronized to an external clock from 600 kHz to 1.2 MHz. A synchronized output allows multiple units to be cascaded in the system.

Features include fully differential inputs, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, and four selectable-gain settings (22 dB, 25 dB, 29.5 dB, and 36 dB). A pin-programmable thermal flag provides seven different thermal warning thresholds. Short-circuit and thermal-overload protection prevents the device from being damaged during a fault condition.

The MAX9708 is available in 56-pin TQFN (8 x 8 mm) and 64-pin TQFP (10 x 10 mm) packages. The device includes short-circuit and thermal-overload protection and operates over the -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range.
