Class-D audio amps boost volume, output power for portables

Dallas, Tex. — Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has introduced a monolithic, filter-free Class-D audio amplifier with an integrated boost converter for portable applications including wireless handsets, personal navigation devices, portable gaming and wireless speakers. Addressing the need for louder volume and higher output power from speakers, the TPA2014D1 provides up to 1.5 W across an 8-ohm load, ensuring that volume is maintained even when the battery discharges to its minimum voltage, TI said.

The TPA2014D1 provides a higher constant output power across the entire Li-ion battery range, maintaining loud volume even as the battery discharges. This is in comparison with conventional Class-D amplifiers for portable devices that are designed to provide high output power, which is dependent on battery voltage so as the battery discharges, the maximum output power decreases, causing reduced volume and increased distortion.

In addition, the TPA2014D1 offers a high overall efficiency of 85 percent, which results in longer battery life and increased talk/playback time. The Class-D audio amplifier also features a wide voltage supply range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V and a high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of 91 dB, which simplify power supply design and enable a connection directly to the battery without any degradation of sound quality, TI said. The TPA2014D1 includes an integrated phase-locked loop (PLL), which synchronizes the Class-D amplifier and boost converter clocks in order to eliminate potential audible beat frequencies.

The TPA2014D1 is designed to work with TI's portable audio converters such as the TLV320AIC3106, the TLV320DAC32 digital-to-analog converter and the Aureus platform of audio DSPs.

Pricing: Suggested resale pricing is $1.32 for the QFN package and $1.40 for the WCSP package in quantities of 1,000.
Availability: The TPA2014D1 Class-D audio power amplifier are available now in a 4 x 4-mm QFN package and will be available at the end of May in a 2.3 x 2.3-mm WCSP package. Samples and EVMs are available at http://ti.com/audio
