D/A converters tout low power

Santa Clara, Calif. — National Semiconductor Corp. today expanded its data conversion offering with three low-power, pin- and function-compatible 8-, 10- and 12-bit digital-to-analog converters.

Each of the three D/A converters provides rail-to-rail output swing and input clock rates of 30 MHz over the entire supply range of 2.7 V to 5.25 V. The reference for each is derived from the power supply, resulting in the widest possible dynamic output range, said Andrew Jue, product marketing director for National's Data Conversion Division. A power-down feature reduces power consumption to less than 0.2 μW, which is especially important for portable, battery-powered applications, he said.

Aimed at portable industrial instruments, the DAC121S101 can be used to trim offset or gain, or generate high-performance analog output signals for control or display.

Combined with National's A/D converters, amplifiers and other analog products, customers can build a complete signal-path solution around the microprocessor, field programmable gate array or digital signal processor that meets specific performance and power requirements, Jue said.

The single-channel D/A converters, with a settling time of 10 μs, are designed to optimize performance and minimize power, Jue said. For example, the 12-bit D/A converter provides typical performance of +0.25, -0.15 least significant bit (LSB) differential non-linearity (DNL), ±2.6 LSB integral non-linearity (INL) and power consumption of .64 mW at 3.6 V.

The 10-bit D/A converter provides typical performance of +0.15, -0.05 LSB DNL, ±0.6 LSB INL and power consumption of .64 mW at 3.6 V (30 MHz clock rate).

The 8-bit D/A converter provides typical performance of +0.04, -0.02 LSB DNL, +0.16, -0.12 LSB INL and power consumption of .64 mW at 3.6 V (30 MHz clock rate).

Available in either a TSOT-6, or MSOP-8 package, pricing starts at $1.35 for the DAC121S101. Click here for the DAC081S101 data sheet. Click here for the DAC101S101 data sheet.Click here for the DAC121S101 data sheet.
