Diodes : LED drivers cut drive circuit requirements and overhead.

Diodes Incorporated introduces a family of LED driver ICs that significantly reduce the number and size of external components required by drive circuits. Operating at switching frequencies up to 600kHz, AP880X Series step-down, DC-DC converters require only four smaller and lower cost inductors and/or capacitors. Ensuring uniform LED brightness and eliminating the need for ballast resistors, the drivers suit a broad range of high-brightness, general illumination duties, including signage, architectural and emergency lighting, and MR16 lamp replacement.

AP880X ICs drive up to 13 series-connected LEDs with a constant current, from voltage sources between 8V and 48V, with efficiencies up to 92%. An integrated soft-start function reduces LED stress and extends lifetime. A choice between PWM and DC input dimming control increases design flexibility. All AP880X devices come in the industry standard SOP-8L package. The AP8800 and AP8801 are also available in the MSOP-8L package, and the AP8802 in exposed-pad DFN and SOP-8L packages.

The AP8800 provides a cost-effective match for 1W LED systems. Operating from 8V to 28V, it furnishes a string of up to seven LEDs with constant drive currents to 350mA. The AP8801 provides higher output power, operating from 8V to 48V, and supports up to thirteen series-connected LEDs with currents to 500mA. The AP8802 has a SOP-8L package with exposed leadframe, meets the requirements of 3W LED systems, and provides up to 13 LEDs with currents to 1A, operating from 8V to 48V.

Available now from authorised distributors, at 10,000 quantity the AP8800 is priced at $0.5 USD, the AP8801 at $0.6 USD and the AP8802 at $0.72 USD. Delivery is 4-6 weeks in production volumes.
