Drive 4- and 8-Ω loads with 1.6-W single-channel audio power amps

Unterpremstaetten, Austria — Offering portable electronics designers higher
output power and lower distortion options, Austriamicrosystems has developed a
family of 1.6-W single-channel audio power devices.

The fully-differential audio power amplifiers offer higher output power (1.6 W) at
comparable distortion levels or lower distortion levels than similar products, making them suited as front-ends for battery powered audio devices, such as MP3 and CD players, mobile phones, PDAs, portable DVD players and other hand-held battery-powered devices, according to the company.

The amplifiers are designed to drive 4Ω and 8Ω loads and the integrated gain circuitry, and their small size make them practical for 2.7 V to 5 V powered devices. Different adjustable gain levels (0 dB, 3 dB and 6 dB, respectively) via external components facilitate reduced component designs. Furthermore, a differential input design is said to improve noise and common-mode rejection, while a bridge-tied load (BTL) design minimizes external component count, while providing high-fidelity audio power amplification.

The integrated shutdown circuitry disables the bias generator and amplifiers, and reduces quiescent current consumption to less than 100 nA. The shutdown input can be set as active-high or active-low, and all devices contain comprehensive click-and-pop suppression circuitry that reduces audible clicks and pops during power-up and shutdown.
