Dual 14-bit A/D targets software defined radios

Milpitas, Calif. — Linear Technology Corp.'s 14-bit, 105 Msamples/second, dual analog-to-digital (A/D) converter touts a flat signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) response of 72.2 dB up to 70 MHz, as well as spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 88 dB at baseband.

The LTC2284 is the latest in the company's pin-compatible family of dual A/D converters. The converters are intended for use in portable communications equipment and the latest generation of software defined radios.

The 10-bit LTC2280 and 12-bit LTC2282 105 Msamples/s dual A/D converters accompany the LTC2284. Featuring a wide bandwidth sampling rate of 105 Msamples/s, these three dual A/D converters expand Linear's 3-V family of 10-, 12- and 14-bit parts ranging from 10 Msamples/s up to 105 Msamples/s. All three 105 Msamples/s A/D converters provide power consumption of 270 mW per channel and crosstalk between channels of -110 dB.

The LTC2284 family is packaged in a 9 x 9 mm QFN package. The integrated bypass capacitance further reduces the overall solution size, according to Linear. The part provides the flexibility to choose between two input spans. The A/D converters are optimized for undersampling of signals up to 140 MHz and have a wide analog input bandwidth of 575 MHz. For downconversion signal chains, Linear Technology recommends the LT5516 direct conversion quadrature demodulator and LT1993 low distortion, low noise A/D converter driver.

All three devices are supported with demo boards, which can be purchased online. The LTC2284, LTC2282 and LTC2280 are available today in production quantities in both commercial and industrial temperature grades and are priced at $61.50, $34.50 and $11.25, respectively in 1,000-piece quantities.
