LONDON , Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — GreedAndFearIndex is a new Software as a Service platform that tracks financial market sentiment by automatically reading and analyzing thousands of financial news articles daily while identifying the companies and business sectors that are in the news.
The service is designed to help financial services professionals more easily digest news flow, understand strength, changes and reversals in market sentiment as expressed in the news and identify emerging changes and exceptional events that may effect the financial markets.
Recent academic research (Bollen, Mao & Zeng, Journal of Computational Science, March 2011 ) suggests that sentiment on social media such as Twitter may accurately predict the movements of the stock market. The internal research conducted at GreedAndFearIndex is still at an early stage, but has indicated the possibility of a predictive relationship between sentiment expressed in financial news and the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
During a measurement period from September 12th to October 19th 2011 , GreedAndFearIndex found that the sentiment captured acted as a strongly correlated leading indicator to the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (see enlarged graph).
GreedAndFearIndex analyses sentiment in the financial news by applying proprietary machine learning algorithms that are able to deeply understand the context and fine nuances of a text. This approach allows GreedAndFearIndex to yield far more accurate and far superior results compared to the simplistic Bayesian and “word counting” approaches used by many previous attempts at sentiment analysis.
The service is made available as an online subscription service delivered as a suite of online analytics and visualization tools, allowing subscribers to filter and search sentiment data by business sectors, companies, and any time interval. It is also available to subscribers as a REST API (“Application Programming Interface”), allowing subscribers to directly tap into the GreedAndFearIndex data and integrate it into their own applications.
