“Green power” switch simplifies resonant designs

San Jose, Calif.—Fairchild Semiconductor's FSFR2100, a highly integrated “green power” switch, is specifically designed for half-bridge, resonant converter designs to 450 watts. As such, it's suited for telcom power supply applications, high end audio amplifiers, large size laser printers, and LCD and PDP TV supplies.

The “system-in-a-package,” all in a 9-pin SIP, integrates two power MOSFETs with fast-recovery body diode, high-side gate driver, current-controlled oscillator, and frequency-limit, soft-start, over-voltage, over-current, overload, and internal thermal shutdown protection.

The FSFR2100's zero voltage switching (ZVS) technique reduces switching losses. Thus the FPS switch can handle up to 200 watts without a heat sink (up to 450 watts with heat sink). Its efficiency is as high as 97 percent in some applications, an improvement of about 10 percent compared to conventional hard-switch converter topologies. The ZVS circuit also provides lower switching noise, at least 5 dB better than provided by hard switching techniques. Offering a burst operation function, the FSFR2100 also brings standby power consumption below 1 watt to easily achieve the industry's 1-watt initiative.

The FSFR2100 utilizes lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild's products meet the European Union's Directive on the restriction of hazardous materials (RoHS).
