Sunnyvale, Calif. Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX3814 TMDS digital video equalizer and cable driver for HDMI and DVI applications. This HDMI/DVI cable driver/equalizer absorbs output reflections to reduce signal-reflection problems between connectors and high-impedance (open) HDMI/DVI transmitter outputs.
The MAX3814 offers a selectable 50% higher output current for the use of 200-ohm back-termination resistors that absorb output reflections, said Maxim. In addition, its input provides 15 dB of signal-loss compensation for long cables (up to 20 m of 24 AWG cable) or circuit board traces (up to 80 in/2 m of FR4 circuit board). This ability to absorb reflections and provide signal-loss compensation make the MAX3814 suitable for notebook docking stations, HDMI inputs for HDTVs, and HDMI TMDS outputs.
Unlike conventional output drivers that require the separation of input/output connectors from their respective interface ICs, the MAX3814's 5 x 5-mm footprint allows it to be placed right at the HDMI or DVI interface. All four of its inputs and outputs behave identically to allow flexibility in pin assignment for optimal signal routing on a circuit board.
The MAX3814 is compatible with HDMI 1.3 and is available in a small, 32-pin TQFN package that is fully specified over the 0°C to +85° temperature range.
Pricing: Starts at $1.95 (1000-up, FOB USA).
Availability: An evaluation kit will be available to speed designs. Please contact the factory for details.
