IDT develops single-chip audio systems for mobile devices

San Jose, Calif. — Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT) has announced a new series of high-definition audio codecs that provide improved audio performance and fidelity, and design flexibility for multimedia notebooks and enterprise desktops. Delivering improved power optimization, the new series features fully integrated capless headphone and stereo speaker amplifiers combined onto a single chip.

The first two devices in this series are Class A/B devices designed for achieving top-quality audio performance. The IDT 92HD81 device is a four-channel, single-chip audio system featuring dynamic thermal management, which is well-suited for cost-sensitive notebooks, netbooks, mobile Internet devices (MIDs), and ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs). It includes a temperature sensor that gradually lowers the device's volume if the temperature increases beyond specification limits and gradually brings the volume back to normal as the device cools unlike traditional thermal protection, which stops the audio playback, IDT said.

The IDT 92HD83 device is a six-channel version featuring the industry's first integrated dual capless headphone amplifiers, aimed at the high-end multimedia notebook market requiring 5.1 surround audio. It also provides the option of connecting multiple users to the end device.

This audio codec series fully supports the Intel low-power ECR15B initiative providing maximum battery life by automatically entering a low-power mode with no audio activity, resuming within 10 ms of audio starting, effectively reducing pops and clicks to an inaudible level, IDT said. The devices can support a 1.5-V to 1.8-V or 3.3-V nominal digital supply and either a 3.3-V or 5-V nominal analog supply.

The new devices also include the proprietary IDT HD sound graphical user interface (GUI) that enables customers to provide end users with easy-to-use control of a PC audio system through complete audio software customization. The HD sound GUI provides intuitive initial individual set-up, input/output audio jack configurability, and allows end users to dynamically adjust their audio experience based on application, environment and content.

Pricing: The IDT 92HD81 and 92HD83 devices are priced at $2.13 and $2.21 respectively in quantities of 10,000.
Availability: The IDT 92HD81 and 92HD83 are currently sampling in the 48-pad RoHS QFN (quad flat no-lead) package.
