Lamp controllers deliver complete digitally-interfaced backlight control system

Irvine, Calif. — Microsemi Corp. has introduced two backlight controllers — the LX1693 and LX1697 — for notebook computers, expanding its portfolio of devices that power cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) in LCD displays.

The LX1693 and LX1697 backlight controllers are optimized for the wide input voltage range found in notebook display applications and support Intel's Display Power Saving Technology that adjusts brightness as a function of video content.

The advanced architecture of the LX1693 includes all the support components needed to provide “automatic brightness control” for notebook computers. This system level power saving technique designed into the LX1693 uses available Microsemi ambient light sensors with a spectral response that closely emulates the human eye.

Both controllers feature Microsemi's advanced resonant full bridge topography in designs that extend the life of CCFL lamps, control EMI emissions and maximize efficiency. On-chip regulators allow direct operation from the notebook's battery, without the need for an external 5-V supply from its system. Input voltage for the two controllers can range from 7 to 25 volts.

Used alone, or with Microsemi's optional SMBus interface ICs, the CCFL lamp controllers can provide notebook, transportable computer and web tablet designers with a complete digitally-interfaced backlight control system. Dimming can be analog, digital, or a combination of the two.

Fault detection features include open lamp, over-voltage, short circuit, over-current and over-temperature protection. Both controllers are RoHS Compliant and lead free.

Pricing: Packaged in a 24-pin MLPQ surface-mount package measuring 4-mm square, the LX1697 is priced at $0.84 in quantities of 10,000. The LX1693 is packaged in a 28-pin MLPQ package measuring 4 x 5 mm, and is priced at $0.92.

Availability: Both are available for immediate sampling. Samples can be ordered at the Microsemi website or from Microsemi sales representatives and authorized distributors.
