LAN switch lowers cost, saves space

Sunnyvale, Calif. — Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX4927 quad, high-speed, high-bandwidth, Gigabit-LAN switch with integrated electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. To save space and cost, the MAX4927 integrates ESD-protection structures that eliminate the need for external ESD diodes.

The MAX4927 device switches signals from two separate interface transformers and connects them to a single, 1000 Base-T Ethernet PHY. The LAN switch also includes LED switches that allow LED output signals to be routed to a docking station along with Ethernet signals. Available in a 5 x 11 mm, 56-pin TQFN package, the MAX4927 is suitable for upgrading the performance of applications that require LED and Ethernet signal switching such as notebooks and docking stations.

Based on a n-channel MOSFET architecture, the MAX4927 includes an efficient, internal charge pump that features ultra-low quiescent current for power-sensitive designs. Unlike other charge-pump circuits, this device includes internal flyback capacitors that reduce design time, board space, and cost, said Maxim. The switch's advanced architecture enables it to achieve extremely low 8.0 pF on-capacitance and 4 ohm on-resistance to meet Ethernet insertion and return-loss specifications.

The MAX4927 operates from a single 3.0-V to 3.6-V supply and is fully specified over the -40°C to +85° extended temperature range. The device meets the ESD protection specification for +/-15 kV IEC 61000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge, +/-8 kV IEC 61000-4-2 Contact Discharge, and +/-15 kV Human Body Model.
