LDOs Flaunt Low-Noise Performance — Allowing Direct Connection to Circuits without Additional Filtering Networks

Unterpremstaetten, Austria — Austriamicrosystems AG has launched the AS1352, a high-performance programmable quad CMOS low dropout voltage regulator (LDO) in a single 4mm x 4mm package that allows a direct connection to noise sensitive circuits without additional filtering networks.

The programmable regulators in the AS1352 have been optimized to deliver the best compromise between quiescent current and regulator performance for mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players and other battery-powered devices.

The one-time programmable (OTP) function of the AS1352 provides flexibility by allowing engineers to program the output voltage for each regulator on-site in the range from 1.8 V to 3.3 V in steps of 100 mV. This allows for fast prototyping as well as full-production ramp up. Factory trimmed versions are also available. The device offers better than
±2% accuracy of the output voltage and output currents of 200 mA for each LDO.

Stability is guaranteed with ceramic output capacitors of only 1µF (± 20%-X5R) up to 4.7µF (± 20%-X5R). The low equivalent series resistance of these capacitors ensures low output impedance at high frequencies.

“Regulation performance of the AS1352 is excellent even under low dropout conditions when the power transistor has to operate in linear mode,” said Walter Moshammer, marketing director of austriamicrosystems' communications business unit. “The low-noise performance of 40µV rms at 10 Hz to 100 Hz bandwidth allows direct connection of noise-sensitive circuits without additional filtering networks.”

Standalone demonstration boards for the AS1352 are available making it easy for engineers to plug and play in the lab, particularly for programming output voltages before implementation on printed-circuit boards.

The AS1352 is available in 12-pin QFN 4mm x 4mm or in wafer bumping packaging. Pricing for the AS1352 programmable quad LDO is $ 1.20 in quantities of 1,000.
