LDOs withstand up to 80-V input

Milpitas, Calif. — Linear Technology Corp. launched a pair of low dropout regulators with input voltage capability up to 80 volts, and low dropout voltage of 400 millivolts, while delivering up to 250 milliamps of output current.

The wide VIN capability of 4 V to 80 V makes LTC's LT3012B and LT3013B LDOs practical for automotive, 48-V telecom backup supplies, and industrial control applications. Additionally, their operating quiescent current (as low as 40 microamps) make them suitable for battery-powered applications as well. The LT3013B's Powergood flag features programmable delay to indicate output regulation.

For high voltage applications that require large input-to-output differentials, the LT3012B and LT3013B regulators offer a highly compact and thermally effective solution, according to LTC. The DFN and TSSOP packages provide thermal performance on a par with much larger conventional packages, the company said.

The LT3012B and LT3013B LDOs are said to operate with very small, low cost ceramic output capacitors. They are stable with only a 3.3 microfarad output capacitor compared to older regulator devices requiring between 10 uF and 100 uF, the company said. The LT3012B and LT3013B do not require added series resistance common to other regulators. Internal protection circuitry includes reverse-battery protection, current limiting thermal limiting and reverse-current protection.

The LT3012BEDE/LT3013BEDE and LT3012BEFE/LT3013BEFE are available with a wide-ranging adjustable output from 1.24 V up to 60 V. Available from stock, the devices are offered in the low profile (0.75 mm) 12-lead DFN (4 x 3 mm) package and the 16-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package.
