Milpitas, Calif. In response to emerging handheld applications, Linear Technology Corp. has developed the LTC3025 very low dropout regulator (VLDO) with a dropout voltage of only 45 mV, and an output current of 300 mA.
The low input voltage (VIN ) capability (0.9 V) is important, as many emerging handheld applications are using a 1.5-V main bus rail, and require output voltages from 1.25 V to 0.5 V to drive low voltage microprocessor and microcontroller cores.
A VLDO typically offers a Vin range down to 0.9 V, a Vout of down to 0.2 V, and a dropout voltage of 100 mV, while a low dropout regulator (LDO), on the other hand, typically provides Vin of 2.5 V, Vout down to 1.25 V, and a dropout voltage of 1 V. Some other manufacturers of LDOs include Austriamicrosystems AG (Unterpremstaetten, Austria), Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Ricoh Corp. (Cupertino, Calif.)
The LTC3025 can also be used for 3.3 V/5 V down to VOUT less than or equal to 1.20 V, since it has a 0.4 V reference. In addition, the LTC3025 offers micropower operation with only 54μA of quiescent current, and less than 1μA in shutdown, maximizing run time in handheld applications.
The LTC3025 regulator optimizes stability and transient response with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) ceramic output capacitors as small as 1uF. Other LTC3025 features include ±2% voltage accuracy over temperature and supply load, fast transient recovery, current limiting and thermal overload shutdown. Its shutdown disconnect feature disconnects both VIN and VBIAS from the output in shutdown mode. The LTC3025 regulator is available in a low profile 6-lead DFN (2mm x 2mm x 0.75mm) package with an exposed pad, offering a very compact and thermally efficient solution.
The LTC3025 is packaged in a 2mm x 2mm QFN-6 and is available from stock. Pricing starts at $1.65 each for 1,000-piece quantities.
