Low-noise linear regulators feature efficiency of switching regulators

San Jose, Calif. — Micrel previewed a family of 'SuperLNRs' (low-noise regulators) which feature the advantages and ease of use of LDOs with low-noise, high PSRR, fast transient performance, while providing the efficiency of a switching regulator. The SuperLNR family combines the “good” characteristics of both linear regulators and DC/DC converters to produce a generation of easy-to-use low-noise regulators. The MIC38300 is a 3 A voltage regulator housed in a 4 x 6-mm MLF package which produces less than 5 mV of output noise and 70 dB of PSRR. The regulator maintains less than 30 mV of output voltage deviation, even during fast load transients. Target markets include point-of-load and digital IC power regulators for networking, servers, wireless base stations, industrial and RF applications.

The MIC38300 features an input voltage range of 3.0 V to 5.5 V and adjustable output voltages as low as 1 V. The solution requires no external inductor and fits into a footprint of less than 40 mm2 . The MIC38300 has a junction operating range from -40°C to 125°C.
