Dallas, TX — Extending its portfolio of high-performance motor control converters from the Burr-Brown product line, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) announces the industry's first quad delta-sigma modulator, featuring 100dB dynamic range, 16-bit resolution and a single +5V supply. The four differential inputs enable direct connection to transducers or low-level signals for measuring and digitizing current in industrial environments, such as motor control and industrial process control.
With the appropriate digital filter and modulator rate, the ADS1204 can be used to achieve 16-bit analog-to-digital conversion with no missing codes. For higher speed measurements, effective resolution of 12 bits can be obtained with a digital filter bandwidth of 160kHz at a modulator rate of 10MHz. The device also offers ±1 LSB integral nonlinearity (INL), ±1 LSB differential nonlinearity (DNL), 0.5% gain error, onboard 20MHz oscillator and four input reference buffers.
Single-Channel Companion Device
The new ADS1203 is a single-channel delta-sigma modulator with 95dB dynamic range, 16-bit resolution and a single +5V supply. The device offers a ±250mV input range to directly digitize current passing through current shunt resistors. With an appropriate current shunt resistor, it is possible to measure the motor drive output current up to 70 amps (RMS).
An effective resolution of 14 bits can be obtained with a digital filter bandwidth of 40kHz at a modulator rate of 10MHz. Other features of the ADS1203 include ±1 LSB integral nonlinearity (INL), ±1 LSB differential nonlinearity (DNL), 1% gain error and a flexible serial interface with four different modes.
The ADS1204 and ADS1203 are both available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The ADS1204 is packaged in a QFN-32 (5×5) and is priced from $6.75 in 1,000 piece quantities. The ADS1203 is packaged in a TSSOP-8 and is priced from $2.70 in 1,000 piece quantities. All pricing is suggested resale.
