My top hidden ‘Gems’ at APEC 2018: Renesas/Intersil

While at APEC 2018 last week in San Antonio, TX, there were a great many excellent new offerings and developments for the power electronics industry. Sometimes, what some may consider lesser displays and discussions, can get lost in the shuffle at such an event, so I wanted to highlight some of these ‘Gems’ that I noticed while roaming the exhibit floor and seminar rooms.

Some of these companies did not have an exhibit booth this year on the APEC exhibit floor, but I can remember some really excellent companies that have large exhibits there in 2018 that also started by just attending the show to see what was new and setting up interviews in a hotel room, the press center or at a table in Starbucks nearby. Here is the first of those ‘Gems”.

What I saw here was the beginning of a newly-formed, innovative power team that will surely rock the industry in the years to come. This combination of companies now gives the electronics industry a very powerful, advanced embedded systems offering.

Renesas had some nice technology demonstrations at their booth including a USB PD 3.0 and USB Type-C power delivery as well as a combination USB PD 3.0 controller and USB Type-C bidirectional buck-boost voltage regulator solution with built-in authentication, configurable firmware, 5V to 20V output, and supports source, sink, and cable.

There was an AVSBus evaluation platform displayed that demonstrated a high current core solution featuring an ISL68137 AVSBus controller, and an ISL9927 60A Smart Power Stage.

Their Digital Multiphase Controllers pretty well cover computing with Smart Power Stages as well.

They also had an IMVP8 (CFL-S) Evaluation platform which enables an IMVP8 core solution for desktop and embedded applications using the Renesas Digital Multiphase and Smart Power Stages using the High-End Desktop (SkyLake/CFL-S) Board.

Included in this design was the ISL69137 (5+2) configuration VCCIN/VGFx rails and the ISL99227 60A Smart Power Stage with an H4 socket for Core/Graphics rail testing.

Another demo was the VR13 System Board with a Server VR13 Core and Memory solution using Renesas Digital Multiphase and Smart Power Stages (This uses ISL69124 3+1 configuration Vcore/VSA rails and ISL99227 60A Smart Power Stage.)

There was also an integrated motor drive solution that demonstrated how to easily control and drive 3-phase BLDC motors used in battery-operated power tools and cleaning robots, among other applications, using high-performance sensor-less motor drive control.

This demo had a single RAJ306000 system in a package that combines an RL78 MCU, analog front end, and customized firmware to drive a motor with optimized efficiency and minimum heating.

    Look at all that gear that you saw at the exhibition. That must really have been quite fun. As is actually getting to speak with the people behind the companies that make that sort of thing too! I don't think I've had the opportunity to attend a trade fair like this but it looks like it would definitely be quite enjoyable even just to walk about the booths! Thanks for sharing!
