Phoenix, Ariz. ON Semiconductor expanded its GigaComm line with a complete SiGe CML solution that's capable of delivering 12 Gigabits/second.
On Semi's silicon germanium (SiGe) based, high bandwidth, fully differential clock distribution, clock driving, clock multiplexing, and clock pre-scaling ICs support current-mode logic (CML) output.
The devices are intended for the telecommunications, networking, high-end computing and automated test equipment industries. Capable of data-rates above 12 Gigabits/s in some cases, these devices are suited for high performance applications in OC-192 applications. High-speed backplane interfacing is simple with propagation delay below 150 ps and rise and fall times below 53 ps, said Mike Radhanauth, ON Semiconductor director of marketing and business development for high frequency products.
The NB7L11M and NB7L14M are 12 Gigabits/s, 8 GHz, 2.5 V or 3.3 V SiGe differential clock drivers. The NBSG16M is a 10 Gigabits/s, 10 GHz, 2.5 V or 3.3 V SiGe differential receiver/driver. The NB7L86M is a 12 Gigabits/s, 8 GHz, 2.5 V or 3.3 V SiGe differential smart gate. The NB7N017M is a 3.3 V, 8-bit dual modulus, divider/prescaler, capable of switching at speed greater than 3.5 GHz.
The devices simplify initial conditions and connection termination with on-chip 50Ω input and output termination. This allows for a point-to-point implementation expected of CMOS solutions, but uncommon in bipolar designs. Like reduced swing emitter-coupled logic (RSECL), the small 400-mV signal swing of CML results in reduced power consumption and rise/fall times. The irregularities that result from back reflection of signals later in the circuit, which is common to high frequency signaling, are minimized by the on-chip termination.
