Dallas, Tex. Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has introduced a precision power operational amplifier (op amp), which operates on supplies up to 100 V and delivers a high output current of +/-50 mA with a 150 mA short circuit limit. The driving force behind the OPA454 design is high-voltage test equipment, which requires a combination of high voltage with high DC accuracy and significant speed. The OPA454 can be used in a wide range of precision op amp applications including optical communications, industrial control, data acquisition and power supplies and regulators.
The OPA454 is unity-gain stable and can track fast moving signals. It features a slew rate of 10 V/us, a gain-bandwidth of 2.5 MHz, and a single- or dual-supply of +/-4 V (8 V) to +/-50 V (100 V). High DC accuracy of 4mV maximum offset and 5 uV/C drift permits precision DC measurement over temperature. The OPA454 also provides a low bias current of +/-110 pA that allows accurate measurements from high impedance sources or sensitive current shunt circuits.
Other features include a fast-acting enable/disable pin referenced to the common pin, which can be ground. This feature saves power and provides protection for the amplifier and the load. In addition, an output status flag, referenced to the common pin, indicates when an over-current or thermal overload condition occurs, and allows easy connection to low-voltage logic circuitry.
TI's PowerPAD technology includes a small exposed metal pad that makes it easy to heat sink over the extended industrial operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. Although designed for high-voltage applications, this general-purpose op amp fits well in systems requiring fixed total supply greater than 36 V or variable supplies from +/-5 V to +/-50 V.
Pricing: The OPA454 is available now in a SO-8 PowerPAD package and is priced at $3.45 each in quantities of 100 (suggested resale pricing).
Availability: The device will also be available in a HSOP-20 PowerPAD package in the second quarter of 2008.
