Single-cell lithium ion charger eliminates the need for wall warts

Sunnyvale, CA — Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX8600/MAX8601, single-/dual-input linear battery chargers for single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) batteries. The MAX8600* is a single-input charger with up to 1A programmable charge current from an AC adaptor. The MAX8601 is a dual-input charger that automatically selects between either a USB or AC adaptor input source. USB charging (protected by the company's U.S. patent # 6,507,172) is particularly attractive to users of PDAs, smartphones, DSCs, and MP3 players, as it frees them from carrying a wall cube.

The MAX8600/MAX8601 offer up to 14V overvoltage protection at the AC and USB inputs. Thermal regulation maximizes the charging rate under all battery and input voltage conditions. Charging is optimized for Li+ cells using a control algorithm that includes low-battery precharging, voltage and current-limited fast charging, and top-off charging. The devices continuously monitor the battery for overvoltage, over-/ under-temperature, and charging time. The charger timeout protection is programmable. Charger status is indicated by three open drain outputs.

The MAX8600/MAX8601 are available in a space-saving 3mm x 3mm, 14-pin TQFN package and are specified for the extended temperature range (-40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius). Prices start at $1.25 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed designs.
