Single-chip broadcast decoder speeds transition to PCI Express

Newport Beach, Calif.—Conexant Systems Inc. has introduced a single-chip broadcast decoder that is designed to help consumer electronics manufacturers speed the transition to PCI Express (PCIe).

The PCIe 1.0a-compliant and 1.1-ready audio/video (A/V) broadcast decoder, part number CX23885, captures and decodes analog and digital broadcasts, and supports worldwide audio and video standards.

The integrated device is equipped with all of the functions required to perform television and external A/V capture, giving manufacturers the flexibility of developing a broad range for products that support both analog and digital broadcasts in standard or high-definition formats.

“New technologies such as PCI Express are required to support higher-quality multimedia applications on consumer electronics devices,” said Al Servati, division director of Convergence Video products for Conexant, in a statement. “Our new A/V decoder provides manufacturers with a single-chip solution that speeds and simplifies the transition to PCI Express, allowing them to bring products to market more quickly and economically.”

The CX23885 PCIe-compliant decoder is backward-compatible with the company's CX25843 A/V decoder. The company plans to release devices in pin-compatible configurations to enable manufacturers to develop multiple products with a variety of features and price points using one integrated device.

The CX23885 is sampling; volume production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2006. The chip is packaged in a 14-mm X 14-mm lead-free 128-pin exposed TQFP, and priced at $10 each in production quantities.
