Supporting all a mobile phone's external accessories, including chargers, headsets, microphones and audio/data connections, Freescale Semiconductor's latest mini USB interface IC eliminates the need for multiple connections and should save mobile device designers valuable board space.
The MC34825 supports the Universal Charging Solution (UCS) recommended by the OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform). It also uses the same 5-pin micro or mini-USB connector for other wired accessories. To identify different accessory types (such as headsets, microphones and chargers), the MC34825 uses intelligent switching to determine which attachment is plugged in. It then informs the host system so that the charge current level can be set accordingly. Analog switches multiplex the 5 pins, enabling this device to support UART and high speed USB data communication, mono or stereo audio headset with or without a microphone and a cord remote controller, manufacturing or research-and-development test cables, and other accessories..
This device, which is now available, supports AC, DC and USB charger types. Other features include up to 28V of over voltage protection for the VBUS power input, low operating current (<10uA at standby), a power-save mode and automatic detachment detection. By catering to multiple functions, Freescale points out that the MC34825 analog IC will lower the power consumption and extend the battery life of mobile devices, such as smartbooks, netbooks, eBooks, mobile phones and digital still cameras.
