SMBus interface bridges analog and digital circuits

Irvine, Calif.— Microsemi Corp. has developed an SMBus to analog interface device that digitizes analog signals for use with digital microprocessors.

Designated the LX1800, the interface device can be paired with the company's ambient light sensors to incorporate microprocessor-controlled digital dimming of backlight lamps in LCD displays. It is also targeted for audio volume control, digital regulator control, and video control interface applications.

The LX1800 contains an 8-bit ADC, an 8-bit DAC and a fully compliant standard serial data SMBus interface in a single package, designed for use in feedback control system applications.

It has an internal band gap reference, and also allows the use of an external reference. The external reference can be used as an analog input for display brightness control or audio volume control using the DAC, or to provide a wider range of operation for higher amplitude analog signals.

The LX1800, which comes in an 8-pin MLP package measuring 3-mm square, is available for immediate sampling. In 10K lot quantities, the unit price for the LX1800 is $0.95.
