Texas Instruments has announced the LM48901 quad Class-D spatial array IC that uses distributed sound processing combined with loudspeaker array technology to enable spatially-enhanced audio systems for multi-speaker portable products and space-constrained applications. The device is intended to simplify the design and programming of such systems and to produce an immersive cinematic audio experience for consumers.
The first in a family of devices, the LM48901 and its companion software feature easy-to-use audio effect programming that can be deployed across a range of products with from two to 16 speakers. The Web-based software tool includes a speaker array coefficient generator that creates unique spatial audio coefficients in a few steps. Also included are Android drivers with an application note, and an evaluation board with GUI.
Key features include:
- Integrated spatial processing DSP
- No algorithm tuning required
- 18-bit stereo ADC
- I2 S and I2 C interfaces
- Multiple ICs can be daisy-chained to support up to 16 speaker channels
- Supports multiple subwoofer configurations
- Integrated 2-W speaker drivers
The LM48901 is available in both a 3.2 x 3.4-mm micro 36-pin SMD and in a 32-pin 5 x 5-mm LLP. Suggested retail pricing is $2.50 in 1,000-unit quantities.
