Switches enhance audio quality

Sunnyvale, Calif. — Maxim Integrated Products Inc. said its latest analog switch family can handle negative signals with a single positive power supply.

Maxim's MAX4901-MAX4905 family of dual, single-pole, single throw (spst) and single, single-pole, double throw (spdt) analog switches feature integrated shunt switches to ground. This feature reduces audio popping and clicking sounds by depleting the capacitive charge, which commonly builds up on the unconnected port of the switch, to ground.

Applications include cell phones, MP3 players, notebook computers, PDAs and other handheld products.

In addition, an extremely low 0.6Ω on-resistance, a low 0.25Ω on-resistance flatness, and a low 0.04 percent total harmonic distortion (THD) yield excellent audio signal quality, according to Maxim. An integrated comparator (MAX4905) gives the user mute and headphone-detection functionality, normally implemented with external components.

The previously released MAX4762-MAX4765 family of analog switches offers the same performance as the MAX4901-MAX4905 in a small UCSP package — but in a dual spdt switch configuration.

The MAX4901-MAX4905 are available in the extended temperature range
(-40°C to +85°C) and in both a tiny 9-bump UCSP (1.5mm x 1.5mm) and an 8-pin TDFN package (3mm x
