The e-health program: A new approach to health care, by utilizing electronic technology, Part 7

In the previous part 6 of this blog series, The e-health program: A new approach to health care, by utilizing electronic technology, Part 6, there is an introduction to RPM (acronym for Remote Patient Monitoring) that is a solution which can be seen as a part of a more general approach known as Telehealth:

“Given this definition, then, of RPM, what is telehealth? And what’s the difference between these two terms? Simply put, where remote patient monitoring refers to the use of a specific technology to facilitate interaction between clinicians and patients at home, telehealth is a broader term that refers to the entire industry, methodology and technologies that enable that type of healthcare.RPM, then, is type of telehealth delivery system. And the term telehealth may, in turn, refer to remote patient monitoring — but it may also be used to refer to a great deal of other things, too. “So a telehealth technology may be a telephone, it may be a videoconference capability, it could be an IVR system,” explains Julie Cherry, RN, MSN, CCO for Care Innovations, in another exclusive RPM Academy video. Telehealth “encompasses all the different kinds of technologies , but it’s the idea that you’re using these technologies to gather information and exchange information. “So that’s telehealth in the broad category,” she adds. “Remote patient management, then, just becomes a part of telehealth.”

… “In most cases, remote patient management would be considered a type of telehealth .” “You have the chance to connect to a clinician, but when I think about RPM, it’s a holistic process,” adds Randy Swanson. “So, we’re connecting from the patient to the clinician, but also to the extended team , and especially to the family caregiver who’s such an integral part of the success of that patient.”

In conclusion, telehealth and remote patient monitoring are terms that are often used interchangeably — but they’re not quite the same thing .” (Source: care innovations)

The electronics solutions for Telehealth are multiple and many big companies in the electronics field have a broad Healthcare and Wellness Solution portfolio like the STMicroelectronics Company (see Figure 1)

One of the most important blocks of such an integrated electronic system is the microcontroller, which is the central computing unit of the circuit acting as the brain of this effective solution (see Figure 2):

What do you think of the Telehealth solution? Do you think it will be largely adopted in the near future?
