The Eco-Friendly Industry: How electronics technology can help protect the environment, Part 1

Nowadays the protection of the environment from pollution is one of the top priorities for many big companies operating in the electronics sector, like for example Apple (see Figure 1):

“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at Apple, and that extends to our commitment to protecting the natural environment for the future. We believe our planet deserves our best thinking. So we’re constantly striving to find or invent solutions to important environmental challenges” (Source: Apple 2016 Environmental Sustainability Progress Report)

Apple is adopting many solutions to realize low impact production plants and data centers as well which are powered by renewable energy sources like sun, wind, and biogas. Moreover, the Apple facilities are designed to be as small as possible, in order to increase energetic efficiency.

Electronics plays a big role in this process: for example, let’s take a look at a biogas system for producing renewable energy in a production plant that integrates many electronics systems such as the electric power facility of the power generating system, using biogas from garbage. See Figure 2:

“Hydrogen derived from biomass will be an important source of fuel in the future of clean energy; and Fuel cell will become an alternative power generation technology for both stationary power generation and transportation such as Fuel cell car or Hybrid cars” (Source: Clean Energy and Water Technologies)

Electronics technology can also help to realize the control system of a renewable power generating system, by means of the presence of temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and control systems. (see Figure 3)

The contribution of electronics technology also includes hybrid electric vehicles because the latest cars and trucks require many power management ICs like for example the DC/DC power conversion block of the hybrid electric motor shown in the Figure 4 below:

Do you think that a smart approach to the environment preservation is necessary nowadays? Do especially large companies have the responsibility to adopt this approach systematically to preserve the place where all of us live?

An unrelated comment on figure 3. If you think this is a good HMI design, do some online research of “High Performance HMI”. The “performance” refers to the performance of the operator (and therefore the plant), rather than the processing power of the hardware.
