The Eco Friendly Industry: How electronics technology can protect the environment, Part 2

Today the level of CO2 in the air is one of the main causes of the global warming, which is responsible for many dangerous climate changes. The Eni Company, as an example, is focusing on the production of renewable energy that could gradually replace Carbon fossil energy:

“Eni had signed a cooperation agreement with General Electric (GE) and the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, Kanat Bozumbayev, to promote the development of renewable energy projects in the country. Under the agreement, Eni and GE will co-operate with the aim of evaluating the possibility of building a wind power plant with approximately 50 MW capacity and identifying further future initiatives that will contribute to achieving the country's strategic goals in terms of sustainable development.” (Source: eni.com)

Renewable energies, like solar and wind, are discontinuous and dependent on environmental conditions; hence, this kind of energy needs to be managed by a smart system able to store and distribute the energy. Many electronics companies are investing in the development of renewable energy management, such as in the case of the Texas Instruments Company (see Figure 1):

“The bq25505 device is specifically designed to efficiently extract the microwatts (μW) to miliwatts (mW) of power generated from a variety of DC energy harvesting, high-impedance sources like photovoltaic (solar) or thermal electric generators (TEGs) without collapsing those sources. The battery-management features of the bq25505 ensure that a secondary rechargeable battery is not overcharged by this extracted power, with voltage boosted, nor depleted beyond safe limits by a system load. The integrated multiplexer gate drivers autonomously switch the system load to a primary no rechargeable battery if the secondary battery voltage falls below the user-defined VBAT_OK threshold.” (Source: Texas Instruments)

Moreover, the policy of big companies working in the electronics sector, like Texas Instruments, is really focused on sustainability:

“TI has a strong history of environmental stewardship and works to continuously improve environmental performance and efficiency at its sites worldwide. We take pride in the billions of chips we produce annually and in our ability to meet customer expectations and manage risks, while the majority of our competitors outsource manufacturing. We make significant investments to operate sustainably, reduce our carbon footprint, better manage waste and air emissions, and reduce water and energy consumption. Additionally, we source and use raw materials responsibly and conscientiously manage the potential environmental impacts of our operations around the world. We foster sustainability at our sites through operational efficiency, quality, risk management, compliance and transparency. ” (Source: TI Environmental Responsibility)

Sustainability is a key point for another big automotive company, Tesla, which produces batteries for electric vehicles in a huge fabrication site powered by solar energy (see Figure 2):

“This massive facility, which will have the largest footprint of any building in the world when complete, is critical to achieving CEO Elon Musk's lofty goal of building 500,000 vehicles annually by 2018.” (Source: businessinsider.com)
