UPS smooths operation of industrial automation, process control apps

West Kingston, RI — American Power Conversion (APC) and Rockwell Automation announce a jointly developed uninterruptible power system (UPS), the Allen Bradley Bulletin 1609 Industrial AC UPS. Designed for use in factory environments, the 1609 UPS line provides battery backup power to critical devices in the control scheme in the event of power dips, sags or interruptions.

The 1609 UPS line is the result of a joint collaboration between APC and Rockwell Automation that began in 2003, when APC joined the Rockwell Automation North American Encompass Partner program. As a result of APC's membership in the program, Rockwell Automation recommends APC's InfraStruXure, Smart-UPS RT, Symmetra LX, and new industrial UPS products to Rockwell's customers and the Allen-Bradley distributor network. APC and Rockwell Automation will also partner together at each of Rockwell Automation's “Complete Automation on the Move” events, as well as support each other at major industry events such as Interphex, Hannover Messe, and Rockwell Automation's Annual Automation Fair.

The Allen-Bradley 1609 UPS provides battery backup for process critical devices such as industrial PCs, programmable logic controllers (PLC), data-logging human machine interfaces (HMI) and control panels, in case of a power outage. Additionally, Rockwell Automation offers the new 1609 UPS with an optional Network Management Card (NMC) integrated into the unit, which gives users the unique ability to monitor all UPSs from a standard Web-browser.

“We are delighted with our partnership with Rockwell Automation, and the Allen Bradley Bulletin 1609 Industrial UPS is a great example of how two industry leaders in their respective fields can work together for a common goal of solving real customer problems,” said Dwight Sperry, APC's vice president of Enterprise Systems and Business Networks. “APC is looking forward to working with Rockwell Automation in the future, supporting our mutual customers and working with their Allen-Bradley distributor channel.”

“Customers tell us that safety and reliability are of vital importance in their applications,” said Brian Lesson, business team leader of IEC Logic Components at Rockwell Automation. “The 1609 AC UPS line, with Web-management capabilities and field-tested reliability, is a perfect example of how customers can reap the benefits of the most advanced technology through strategic partnerships with companies like American Power Conversion.”

All units have a 500VA (volt-amp) capacity and provide approximately nine minutes of battery backup at full load, which gives users the ability to execute a controlled shut-down of the entire operation, in the event of a prolonged power outage.

Once the branch circuit breaker is turned off, a qualified electrician first snaps-in the UPS into a DIN-rail or mounts it on the back of the panel, then connects it to the computer or industrial control system via terminal wiring blocks, located at the front of the 1609 AC UPS unit. To make integration with other devices as simple as possible, dry contact I/O ports are accessible on the front of the unit.

The 1609 AC UPS has multiple options for remote management. If the 1609 Network Management Card (NMC) is selected, users can configure the UPS with a unique IP (internet protocol) address to monitor and control the UPS via a standard Web browser. Users can log onto the Web and configure the low transfer voltage setting, event and data logs, fault notification, temperature alarm settings, as well as other options. In addition to Web management, data can also be viewed through an RSView interface with a SNMP/OPC server provided by Rockwell Automation.

Additionally, the unit offers an elevated temperature performance feature that gives customers the ability to use the 1609 AC UPS in heat as high as 50 degrees Celsius. The 120Volt and 230Volt versions are currently available worldwide.
