Voltage translator simplifies SD card design applications

San Jose, Calif. — Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced a low-voltage, dual-supply Secure Digital (SD) interface voltage translator that simplifies design in SD card applications.

The FXL2SD106 features a built-in automatic direction control allowing the device to sense and control the direction the data should flow, without a direction control pin. This automatic direction control feature reduces design complexity by eliminating the need to program the general-purpose IO (GPIO) for direction control, and reduces the number of pins required for controlling the translator from 20 pins to 16 pins. This translator is well-suited for applications using SD cards such as printers, laptop PCs, GPS systems and camera phones.

Housed in a 2.5 x 3.5-mm, 16-pin DQFN package, the FXL2SD106 has been specifically designed to protect SD cards from adverse electrostatic discharge (ESD) events. The SD interface voltage translator features (B side) ESD protection of 12 kV; alternate solutions only reach a maximum of 6 kV, said Fairchild, providing extra protection in harsh environments. The device also offers an output enable control feature allowing designers to disable the outputs to save power when the product is not in use.

The FXL2SD106 uses lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. The device is RoHS compliant.
